Studio J FAQ

What to Wear to Your...

Headshot Session
This varies greatly depending on whether you work for a small business, large company, or you're an entrepreneur as well as what your industry is. For example, headshots for an artist will look very different than headshots for a real estate agent.

This is why we defer to your judgement or your companies judgement.

If you work for a large company, we recommend taking a look at the other headshots listed on their website and modeling your look after that to stay consistent.

Small companies are similar but usually afford a bit more flexibility for personality and clothing choices. And entrepreneurs or artists, well, you just do you!

Senior Session
When it comes to senior sessions, it's always great to have a few different looks to choose from. For this reason, we love the variety it brings to photos when you have a casual option, a more formal option, and a personalized option. (Or some of each, if your session allows for more than three outfits)

A casual option can look something like a t-shirt and jeans for guys. Maybe throw on a button down over it and roll the sleeves or choose khaki shorts and a polo. For girls, a sundress and jean jacket or a blouse with jeans. Something that you're comfortable in and that really represents you and your style.
*Try to avoid distracting patterns or big logos.

A formal option for guys might look like a button down and blazer combo or darker jeans and a colored button down or crew neck. For the ladies, we would recommend dark jeans and a sweater, a romper and heels or a more structured dress with a simple neckline.

When it comes to choosing a personalized look, think about what you love or what your favorite hobbies/sports are. This clothing option could include things like sports uniforms or dance outfits, you could bring a musical instrument or choose things that represent your hobby like hiking shoes or paint brushes. Get creative and let your personality shine through!

Engagement Session
For our newly engaged couples we recommend the following:
  • Wear clothes that make you feel like you
  • Compliment each other, but don't match
  • Choose pastels, cool colors and neutral tones (ie, no neon colors... :)
  • Stick to two outfits - this allows us to use your session time for capturing photos as opposed to outfit changes
  • Opt for classic looks - our goal is to look back and see timeless photos, not dated photos
  • Of course, keep the season in mind
  • Add accessories - a fun necklace, a jacket, different layers. Things that can be easily added or taken off to add variety

Family/Portrait Sessions
For family and portrait sessions we try to keep it as simple as possible. Our main advice is to keep it YOU, don't overcomplicate things.

Choose coordinating colors and keep your location in mind. For example, if you're headed to a yellow dried grass field you might not want to put everyone in shades of yellow/tan... :)

Avoid distracting patterns and big logos and try not to put everyone in jeans. It tends to look very matchy-matchy.
